The PS5 undergoes another price increase in Japan, now priced £170 higher than its original release cost

Sony has revealed an upcoming surge in the retail cost of its PlayStation 5 consoles in Japan, which will see a ¥13,000 increment for both its traditional and digital-only models.
In a statement on the official Japanese PlayStation Blog, Sony pointed to "challenging conditions in the broader economic landscape, including global market fluctuations," as reasons for the increase, which they believe will impact their operations.

Beginning on September 2nd, the price for the version with a disc drive will go up from ¥66,980 to ¥79,980, while the digital-only model will see its price change from ¥59,980 to ¥72,980.

Notably, this isn't the first time Sony has escalated prices for its PlayStation 5 in Japan. The original price of the standard console was ¥49,980 at its 2020 debut, and the Digital Edition was initially listed at ¥39,980, marking a cumulative spike of approximately £160 and £170, respectively.

Additionally, Sony has verified that the cost of various PlayStation accessories, such as the DualSense Wireless Controllers and the upcoming PlayStation VR2, will experience a price rise starting September 2nd in Japan.

The increase in 2022 was the previous occasion Sony escalated PlayStation 5 prices in Japan. That increment was echoed with a £30/€50 rise for the console in the UK and European markets, setting the price at £480/€550 for the standard edition and £390/€450 for the Digital Edition. There is currently no suggestion that this new price adjustment in Japan will extend to other markets.
