Pokémon Company Acquires a Trading Card Manufacturer

27 Apr 2022

The Pokémon Company is now in control of the Millennium Print Group, best known for printing cards for the Pokémon Trading Card Game with a huge audience. The two companies have been collaborating since 2015. This acquisition was announced in a press release by the Pokémon Company, mentioning that the primary goal is to foster the card printer’s development and help it scale to become the dominant trading card printer “serving the broader industry.” It still notes that Millenium Print Group will remain an autonomous organization, however. The Pokémon Company International's intention is to provide its investment as well as expertise to support the newly acquired company along the way.

The coronavirus pandemic did not affect Pokémon cards in a negative way. In fact, it rather stimulated the growth of the game, causing the Pokémon Company to promise an increased batch of new cards to meet the ever-growing demand. This was announced in February 2021. It went so far that eBay introduced a new feature to its functionality that enables you to scan trading cards before you can sell them. That is, the demand is expected to grow even further.

In its press release, the Pokémon Company highlighted the achievement of the Millenium Print Group while also stating that it would like to raise the bar for it and see the quality of its card meet new, unprecedented standards. The question is what chances the newly bought Millennium Print Group has of actually growing next to the giant. What do you think about its prospects? You are most welcome to share your ideas in the comments. Be sure to mention any improvements you think the cards are asking for, too, so we can gather first-hand feedback.
