Destiny 2 Will No Longer Receive Annual Expansions Going Forward – Rumour

07 Aug 2024

Following the announcement of further layoffs impacting 220 employees, Bungie assured fans that its commitment to future Destiny content would remain steady. However, new insights from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg indicate that changes may be afoot behind the scenes.

According to unnamed sources within the company, Bungie's approach toward Destiny 2 content is shifting; rather than continuing with annual expansions, the studio plans to introduce more frequent, smaller updates moving forward. This perspective had previously been echoed by industry journalist Jeff Grubb.

With a noticeable decline in expansion sales—evidenced by the lackluster launch of The Final Shape compared to last year's Lightfall—Bungie is re-evaluating its strategy. The substantial costs associated with expansion development have factored into this decision, leading to a pivot under the direction of Tyson Green.

This new strategy aims to not only retain current players but also entice newcomers. The studio is considering offering free updates akin to the recently released Into the Light, rather than charging for them, thereby catering to the game's dedicated community. Additionally, future releases may feature previously unseen characters and locations from the Destiny universe.

As for the franchise's trajectory beyond these updates, uncertainty lingers. There are no plans for a third installment, Destiny 3, contradicting any prior speculation, and it appears a third-person spinoff, codenamed Payback, has been shelved in favor of prioritizing the development of Marathon.
