Conquer Metyr, Mother of Fingers in Elden Ring: In-Depth Boss Fight Guide

16 Jul 2024

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is rife with boss battles both hidden and overt, yet none are as unsettling as Metyr, Mother of Fingers. This colossal creature, composed of myriad fingers, arms, and a tail, charges at you with relentless force. If defeating her seems daunting, this guide will equip you with crucial strategies to overcome her attacks in both challenging phases.

Ensuring Your Build is Ready

Before diving into the confrontation with Metyr, it's vital to ensure your build is optimized. It's recommended to reach Scadutree Blessing levels 10 to 12. Using a weapon like Rivers of Blood, which focuses on Bleed or Stagger, will significantly enhance your chances. Once you're prepared, head towards the Cathedral of Maus Metyr in Scadu Altus to engage her.

Phase 1: Physical Onslaught with Occasional Spells

Staying in Front for Advantage

Metyr's first phase, while the initial stage, is equally challenging as phase two. Numerous attacks must be anticipated, demanding versatile strategies. A build aligned with your playstyle will be crucial. For optimal positioning, stay in front of Metyr where she is least threatening. Her sides are perilous with devastating leg attacks, but attacking the gash on her chest—her weak spot—will expedite the battle.

Key Attacks to Watch Out For

Metyr's notable attack is her large laser beam. Her eye glows before shooting the beam, which can be evaded by rolling through. This attack reoccurs throughout the fight. Additional attacks include bodyslams, head swings, and airborne projectile assaults:

  • Bodyslam: She places her hands on her chest, raises her front, and slams down. Post-attack, there’s a moment to strike her chest.
  • Headbutt: With hands grounded, she slowly steps, then leaps headfirst at you. Dodge inward as her head descends.
  • Airborne Slam: She leaps, releases projectiles, and crashes down. Dodge normally, then exploit the opening.

Melee Attacks

Metyr also employs several melee-range assaults:

  • Swipe: Swipes with both hands sequentially. Block or dodge through this.
  • Hand Slam: Raises and slams both hands three times, with a delayed third slam.
  • Finger Attack: Hits with fingers from under her chest; differs slightly from bodyslam.
  • Elbow Slam: Turns before slamming her elbow.
  • Leg Jab: Jabs at you with her leg.
  • Leg Kicks: Approaches from the side, kicking with her legs. Avoid her flanks to prevent entanglement.

Spells in Phase 1

In phase one, Metyr uses limited spells. The primary one is a large explosion—she wraps her arms, lowers her eye, and releases an explosion. Stay close to avoid its impact or find a safe spot if you're distant.

Phase 2: Enhanced Magical Assaults

Adapting to New Dynamics

Phase two amplifies the fight's complexity. Metyr crouches, charges, and releases energy, knocking you down. Remain grounded until you see Metyr float and a pink flash appears, then use a "dodge getup" to evade the subsequent blast.

Modified and New Attacks

While retaining most phase one attacks, phase two introduces new spells and alters existing ones. Her beam attack now emits three beams, necessitating sprinting to dodge. Utilizing a FAITH or INT build can emulate her spell-heavy style. A new noteworthy spell is the magical minefield, summoning damaging orbs—exit swiftly and prepare for a counter-attack.

Advanced Slam and "Ultimate" Attack

The upgraded slam is fiercer; she floats, spins, and charges at you, inflicting damage on contact. Evade by running early, altering your course, then dodging. Metyr's ultimate attack manifests as a large black hole emitting a sweeping laser. To avoid this, dash toward the laser, positioning between it and the ground. If unreachable, shield the damage and move close for the second sweep.

Upon defeating Metyr, Mother of Fingers, you'll earn Remembrance of the Mother of Fingers and 420,000 runes. The Remembrance can be sold for 30,000 Runes or exchanged with Enia for either the Staff of the Great Beyond or the Gazing Finger, a colossal weapon capable of immense damage with the correct build.
